History: Temporary Bridge Solution for the Dokhaven in Vlissingen
The Dokhaven (Dock Harbour) in Vlissingen has a long and rich maritime history. Established in 1614, the area later became home to the renowned shipyard De Schelde, founded in 1875, and played a vital role in Dutch shipbuilding and naval activities. In recent decades, the area has been transformed into the Scheldekwartier, a modern urban district where over 1,000 new homes have now been built.
A Temporary Link in a Transforming District
As part of this redevelopment, a fixed connection across the Dokhaven was needed. However, construction of a permanent movable bridge was only planned for a later phase. Janson Bridging was commissioned to deliver a temporary and effective bridging solution.
Our engineers designed an innovative bridge constructed from standard modular bridge sections. The design included a retractable central span, specially developed to accommodate the occasional passage of vessels—still a requirement due to the continued, if limited, maritime activity in the harbour.
Unique Movable Bridge Mechanism
Beneath the central span, a pontoon was fitted with a hydraulic lifting system. This allowed the bridge segment to be lifted and rotated 90 degrees sideways to clear the passage. The result was a temporary fixed bridge that could be moved when needed—a unique and technically advanced solution.
From Temporary Structure to Long-Term Legacy
The temporary bridge was installed in 2005 and served as a vital connection in the Scheldekwartier for over 16 years. In 2021, it was dismantled following the completion and commissioning of the new permanent movable bridge.
This project is a prime example of how Janson Bridging delivers fast, smart, and creative solutions to complex infrastructural challenges—using modular systems and deep engineering expertise.
